RASC News Agency: The Taliban have announced plans to publicly flog 18 individuals today Tuesday, July 2, in Tirinkoot, the capital city of Uruzgan province. A statement from the Taliban’s Directorate of Information and Culture in Uruzgan detailed this event, extending an invitation to local residents to observe the punishment.
The announcement specifies that the flogging will be carried out this Tuesday afternoon at the Tarinkot stadium. The Taliban have instructed attendees not to bring mobile phones or cameras to the event. This announcement follows a similar incident on Monday in Parwan province, north of Kabul, where the Taliban publicly flogged four individuals.
In the nearly three years of their regime, the Taliban have subjected hundreds of individuals to public flogging across various provinces. Several months ago, over 60 individuals, including 18 women, were publicly flogged in Sar-e Pol province. Two additional public floggings have been documented in recent days in Panjshir province.
The United Nations and other international bodies have consistently condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment, labeling it a violation of Afghanistani citizens’ human rights. Nonetheless, the Taliban maintain that they are enforcing Sharia law, asserting that these actions are internal matters and not subject to foreign intervention. Critics and Islamic scholars argue that the Taliban’s actions adhere to their unique interpretation of “Taliban Sharia,” rather than authentic Islamic principles.
Mawlawi Habibullah Hassam, the head of the Ulama Committee of the Resistance Front, has criticized the Taliban’s actions as erroneous, asserting that such reprehensible practices are issued under the Taliban’s version of Sharia.
