RASC News Agency: Irin Khan, the special rapporteur for the United Nations on freedom of expression, stated in the latest report that more than two thousand Afghanistani journalists have left the country following the Taliban’s resurgence. According to reports released on Saturday, June 29, he made these remarks during a session held at the UN Human Rights Council. In Irin Khan’s report as the UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression, it is mentioned that the ruling group must refrain from humiliating and threatening the media.
During their nearly three years of control over the country, the Taliban have imposed increasingly severe restrictions on journalists and media outlets, detaining, imprisoning, and torturing dozens of reporters. Moreover, media support organizations have reported significant impediments to media activities and journalists. Many media outlets ceased operations after the Taliban’s takeover, prompting some journalists to abandon their profession.
The Taliban, however, consistently assert their support for journalists aligned with their interests and interpretation of Sharia law, claiming not to have detained any journalists. Importantly, reports indicate that following the Taliban’s assumption of power, many journalists across various provinces have been coerced into aligning their news coverage with Taliban directives.
