RASC News Agency: The increasing addiction to drugs, including cigarettes, Tobacco, and hashish, among the youth of Kandahar province is alarming its residents. According to locals, the number of young people addicted to narcotics is growing daily in this province. Experts attribute the main causes of youth addiction to rising unemployment, widespread poverty, and lack of access to education.
Azim, a resident of Kandahar, told RASC, “In our community, many individuals are visibly addicted to narcotics, which poses a significant challenge for society.” Kandahar residents are calling for the creation of job opportunities for the youth, the expansion of education in deprived and remote areas, and the prohibition of narcotics sales in the market.
It is noteworthy that the unprecedented rise in unemployment in Afghanistan and the lack of educational opportunities for the youth have paved the way for increased addiction, with more young people turning to drugs every day. The general populace reports that drug use among the youth has surged, with smoking cigarettes and using tobacco becoming commonplace. Young people and even adolescents have turned to smoking hashish, primarily due to severe unemployment and lack of prospects.
Gul Ahmad from Badakhshan states that young people in this province have also turned to smoking and drug use, often seen gathering under walls and near houses to smoke cigarettes and hashish in groups. It is also reported that many youths in Helmand have turned to narcotics. A report published last week indicated that young people in this province are consuming heroin.
