RASC News Agency: The United Nations has announced that the third Doha meeting on Afghanistan, under Taliban control, will take place on June 30 and July 1. In a statement released on Tuesday, May 21, the international body provided details on the recent meeting between the UN Deputy Secretary-General and Taliban officials, as well as several Afghanistani figures. It was also noted that civil society activists will participate in the upcoming Doha meeting.
According to the statement, Afghanistani figures emphasized that any strategy for international engagement with the Taliban must address the humanitarian, developmental, and economic challenges that Afghanistan faces under their rule. The statement also mentioned that during the meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, political figures discussed the dangers and threats posed by drugs and “terrorist groups” in the country.
The United Nations stated that the objective of the third Doha meeting is to enhance international engagement with the Taliban in a “coherent and structured” manner. The UN Deputy Secretary-General held meetings with Taliban officials and several Afghanistani political figures, including former President Hamid Karzai, from May 19 to May 21.
She noted that during these meetings, she urged the Taliban to participate in the third Doha meeting on Afghanistan. Taliban representatives abstained from the second UN meeting in Doha, held on February 18 and 19 last year, due to the UN’s failure to meet their demands.
