Taliban Imprison Religious Scholar in Faraj, Panjshir

RASC News Agency: Local sources report that the Taliban have imprisoned a religious scholar in the Faraj area of Panjshir for leading Eid al-Adha prayers before the date designated by the group. Sources confirm that the Taliban summoned the scholar and his son to their intelligence headquarters on Saturday, June 22, subsequently detaining them.

The scholar, Sufi Aziz, conducted the Eid prayer in Sangin village, Faraj, on the preceding Sunday, defying the Taliban leader’s directive. The Taliban’s intelligence agency interrogated Sufi Aziz and three others on the same day. The Taliban have yet to comment on the incident. Last year, the group detained several Eid prayer leaders who conducted prayers contrary to Taliban orders, viewing such actions as disobedience and unlawful. The Taliban mandate adherence to their leader’s commands.

Unlike Saudi Arabia and several other Islamic countries, the Taliban declared Monday as the first day of Eid al-Adha. Over the past year, the Taliban have frequently detained, imprisoned, and, in some cases, killed residents of Panjshir under various pretexts. In a recent incident, the Taliban arrested seven individuals in Roy Dara village in Shutul district.

Residents report that arresting and torturing people has become a relentless trend, with many facing flogging, imprisonment, and torture, making life increasingly difficult. Many attribute the rise in youth suicides to unemployment and the Taliban’s restrictions. Despite this, the Taliban continue to detain, torture, and imprison young people under various pretexts.
