RASC News Agency reports that a violent encounter between the Taliban and local residents in Badakhshan province has resulted in one death and injuries to at least ten others due to gunfire. Sources reported to the media on Friday, May 4, that Ejaz-ul-Haq, the Taliban governor of Darayim district, shot and killed Nizamuddin, a local resident from Qarluq village, igniting widespread public outrage.
According to a local witness, the incident occurred when Pashtun members of the Taliban, under the guise of destroying opium poppy fields, invaded local homes and were confronted by the villagers.VResidents of Qarluq in Darayim district denounced the Taliban’s actions as an overt infringement of their privacy and initiated protests with the slogan “Death to the Emirate.”
The Taliban responded aggressively to the protests by firing on unarmed civilians, resulting in injuries. The injured were taken to medical facilities in Darayim for treatment. In the meantime, local residents affirmed their determination to continue and expand their protests.
While confrontations between the Taliban and protestors are not uncommon in Afghanistan, this incident marks the first direct clash between Badakhshan residents and the Taliban.
