Five Children from Herat Killed by Unexploded Landmines

RASC News Agency: Local sources from Herat province report that an explosion caused by a leftover landmine from the war in Zenda Jan district has resulted in the death of one child and injuries to four others. Local sources informed the media today, Friday, Apr 19, that the incident occurred yesterday afternoon in the “Qala-e-Raig” area of Zenda Jan district.

According to sources, the children were playing with a landmine in an old house when the explosion happened. Sources added that the health condition of several of the injured children is critical. Local Taliban officials in Herat province have yet to provide any comments on this incident.

Children often fall victim to such incidents due to their lack of awareness of the dangers posed by landmines. Nearly half a century of war in Afghanistan has contaminated vast areas of the country with landmines, which sometimes claim the lives of children.

According to United Nations information, three million people in Afghanistan live within a one-kilometer radius of landmines, improvised explosive devices, and remnants of war explosives.
