RASC News Agency: Thomas West, the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan, recently met with Mohammad Abushahab, the Deputy Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, to discuss the empowerment of Afghanistani women and girls. According to a message posted on social media by the United Arab Emirates mission to the United Nations on Saturday, April 13th, both parties also exchanged views on the latest developments in Afghanistan during the meeting.
Reports indicate that Thomas West and the Deputy Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates also engaged in discussions regarding the implementation of the latest United Nations Security Council resolution, prepared by the United Arab Emirates and Japan. The United Nations Security Council, in this resolution, called upon António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to appoint a Special Representative for Afghanistan under the Taliban’s control.
The Taliban oppose the appointment of this representative and argue that there is no need for such a representative in the presence of UNAMA, and representatives are appointed for countries in active conflict. The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General had earlier stated that work on appointing a Special Representative for Afghanistan under the Taliban’s control is continuing in earnest.
