Russian Foreign Minister Criticizes U.S. Approach in Afghanistan: No Counterterrorism Efforts in 20 Years

RASC News Agency: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized U.S. policies two days after the deadly ISIS attack on a concert hall in Moscow, stating, “America has not combated terrorism in twenty years.” He made these remarks on Sunday, Mar 24, during an interview with Russia One television, adding, “Twenty years of presence in Afghanistan indicate that Americans have not combated terrorism.”

Mr. Lavrov further added that after the September 11 attack in 2001, America came to Afghanistan with the “sympathy” of the United Nations Security Council, and Russia also supported it. The Russian Foreign Minister also stated, “They created structures and organizations there that later turned into Al-Qaeda.”

He added that America’s twenty-year presence in Afghanistan had no other result in that country. Mr. Lavrov made these statements as ISIS claimed responsibility for the recent attack on the Crocus concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow, resulting in the deaths of 143 people.
