RASC News Agency: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced the distribution of new textbooks to 5.7 million students in government schools in Afghanistan last year. According to a message released by UNICEF on social media on Sunday, Feb 11, the organization will provide textbooks and other educational materials for elementary students nationwide. This development coincides with the Taliban’s imposition of restrictions, including the barring of girls above the sixth grade from education and the closure of language centers, computer facilities, and other skills training centers for them.
Recently, the International Rescue Committee reported that nearly 100,000 female students enrolled in government and private universities in Afghanistan have been unable to continue their education, effectively blocking access to higher education for girls who had completed high school. The International Rescue Committee’s report underscores the severe economic consequences of banning girls’ education in Afghanistan, estimating a cost to the country’s economy of nearly $5.4 billion.
It is important to note that since taking power, the Taliban have issued oppressive decrees against the rights of women and girls, depriving them of their most basic rights. Despite evoking widespread reactions, the Taliban have shown no flexibility on this matter.
