Taliban intelligence has yet to offer an explanation for Abdul Rahman Zarmati’s detention. Abdul Rahman Zarmati served as the governor of several districts in Paktia province during the former government of Afghanistan. Known for his staunch opposition to the Taliban, he has confronted the group on numerous occasions.
Mr. Zarmati battled against the Taliban in the waning days of the former government and departed the district along with several of his guards after it fell under siege by the group. Despite the Taliban’s declaration of a general amnesty upon seizing control of the country, pledging not to detain former military personnel and government officials, they have persistently detained, incarcerated, tortured, and executed former military personnel from various provinces over the past two years.
In this era, akin to their initial rule, the Taliban have deprived the people of Afghanistan of democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of belief, and freedom of action, displaying a blatant disregard for human rights.
