RASC News Agency: In the ongoing discourse surrounding the Taliban’s detainment of women in Kabul, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, the former Foreign Minister, vehemently denounced this action as a “shameful insult” to the cherished values of Afghanistan society. Mr. Atmar addressed this matter on January 9, delivering a poignant message on the social media platform X, wherein he underscored his urgent appeal for the United Nations to subject the perpetrators of these women’s detainment to meticulous international legal scrutiny.
According to the erstwhile Foreign Minister of the government, upholding the dignity of women is deemed an obligatory imperative aligned with the core values of Afghanistan society. He accentuated that those accountable for the detainment must be held responsible for this “heinous” act. Mr. Atmar directed his articulate discourse towards the UNAMA office and the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Afghanistan, emphasizing that it falls upon human rights mechanisms, especially UNAMA, to expeditiously conduct an exhaustive investigation into the Taliban’s detainment of girls from the thoroughfares of Kabul and ensure the perpetrators are brought “under the jurisdiction of international justice.”
It is noteworthy that the former Foreign Minister articulated these statements amidst reports of numerous women and girls being detained and subjected to harassment by the Taliban in Kabul recently, ostensibly under the pretext of inadequate veiling. The actions of the Taliban have encountered widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and political authorities. Previously, Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf responded to the Taliban’s actions, cautioning, “Fear God, and refrain from detaining their daughters and women; it casts shame upon them.”
