RASC News Agency: Certain families in the Herat province of western Afghanistan confirm a recent surge of COVID-19 impacting the region. Esmat Mohammadi, a resident of Herat, informed a RASC reporter on Sunday, December 24th, that the coronavirus has peaked among families, causing significant concerns for the population. Mohammadi articulates that, on one hand, illness, and on the other hand, severe economic challenges, have given rise to a humanitarian crisis. He underscores that many families in Herat currently lack the means to procure a basic food package. Furthermore, Behrouz Rahmati, another Herat resident, informs RASC that if the coronavirus further spreads among the population, health centers should launch campaigns to prevent the disease, ultimately reducing the human toll.
He adds that in the past years of the COVID-19 pandemic, many lives were lost, and numerous families faced considerable grief. Meanwhile, Omar Durakhshan, a civil activist in Herat, states to RASC, “With the onset of winter and the cooling weather, the coronavirus has surged among the population. Health authorities and health centers must promptly implement momentary plans to minimize human casualties.” He clarifies that if the number of COVID-19 cases rises, regional and international countries should send humanitarian aid.
These statements emerge from Herat residents at a time when Taliban authorities in the province claim that no cases of the coronavirus have been officially registered. It is noteworthy that in previous years, the coronavirus originated in China and gradually disseminated worldwide, resulting in millions of lives lost.
