RASC News Agency: A recent CNN report highlights a disturbing increase in suicides among Afghanistani girls attributed to the stringent measures imposed by the Taliban group. Conducting interviews with suicide victims and medical professionals in Afghanistan, CNN compiled information for their special report, publicly revealing a significant surge in suicide attempts among girls under the Taliban’s control.
According to doctors and human rights organizations, there has been a marked escalation in the number of female patients seeking assistance for mental and psychological disorders. A physician in Herat province disclosed that the proportion of female patients in his clinic has escalated from 40% to 50%. The restrictive environment enforced by the Taliban predominantly impacts the mental health of these patients.
In contrast, the Taliban group issued a statement to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, asserting that the number of suicides among Afghanistani women and girls has, in fact, decreased. This contradicts reports from RASC News Agency, which consistently documents cases of women and girls taking their own lives.
Despite persistent calls from the international community urging the Taliban group to lift restrictions on women and girls, the group maintains that women’s rights are upheld within the framework of Islamic Sharia, contrary to compelling evidence. It is disconcerting to observe that Afghanistan stands as the sole country where girls are deprived of the right to education, exacerbating the challenges faced by Afghanistani women and girls.
