RASC News Agency: The United Nations Secretary General’s special representative for Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, expressed her concern over the ongoing restrictions imposed on Afghanistani women and girls by the Taliban group. Speaking at a meeting called “Women in Islam,” held by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, November 9th, Mrs. Otunbayeva stated that the fundamental rights of half of the country’s population have been systematically violated under the control of the Taliban group.
Mrs. Otunbayeva’s concern was based on her meetings with Afghanistani women and girls, where she discovered that more than 46% of them are against recognizing the Taliban regime. She further added that over 50% of Afghanistani women and girls emphasized that the Taliban group’s regime should only be recognized if the rights of women and girls are ensured.
During the meeting, Mrs. Otunbayeva called for a global consensus to address the Afghanistan crisis and highlighted that life for many women and girls has become difficult under the control of the Taliban group.
Despite repeated appeals from international and domestic authorities to lift the restrictions on women, the Taliban group has shown no flexibility in this matter and has continued to impose more and more restrictions on Afghanistani women and girls.
This is despite the fact that, since the Taliban group took control of the country, girls and women have been stripped of their most basic rights and have been on the brink of exclusion from social life and society. It is evident that the Taliban group is attempting to dismantle the progress made over the past twenty years.
