RASC News Agency: At least 50 people lost their lives in two devastating traffic accidents on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, according to local reports. These incidents occurred on Wednesday night December 18, in Ghazni province, approximately 15 kilometers apart. One of the collisions took place in the “Nani Bazaar” area of Ghazni. Sources revealed that both accidents involved 580-model buses one colliding with a gas tanker and the other with a trailer. Initial reports confirm at least 50 fatalities and 15 injuries, with officials warning that the death toll may rise.
Victims have been transported to hospitals in Ghazni and Zabul provinces. Local Taliban authorities in Zabul have verified the occurrence of these two catastrophic accidents. The buses involved were reportedly traveling from Helmand to Kabul. While the exact causes of the accidents remain unclear, the Kabul-Kandahar highway has a grim history of frequent and fatal traffic incidents. Over the past few weeks, a sharp increase in road accidents across Afghanistan has raised alarm among citizens.
Residents attribute these tragedies to deteriorating road infrastructure, reckless driving, and widespread noncompliance with traffic regulations. Negligence and a lack of professionalism among drivers are also cited as contributing factors. It is worth noting that many Afghanistani drivers reportedly have little to no knowledge of traffic laws. Licenses are often obtained through connections and bribery, bypassing proper training or certification processes. Such systemic shortcomings exacerbate the risks on Afghanistan’s roads, leaving countless lives vulnerable to preventable tragedies.
