Escalating Poverty and Forced Marriages: A 16-Year-Old Girl Takes Her Own Life in Farya

RASC News Agency: Local sources reports an incident in Faryab, where local sources have confirmed the suicide of a 16-year-old girl. The tragedy occurred in the Belcheragh district, with forced marriage cited as the primary cause. Identified as “Parima,” the girl was a resident of Koliyan village in Belcheragh. Last week, she attempted to end her life by ingesting acid. Despite being admitted to a provincial hospital in Balkh, she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, November 17.

Sources indicate that the forced marriage was the underlying trigger for her desperate act, though specific details about the arrangement remain unclear. Taliban officials in Faryab have yet to issue any statement regarding the incident. This devastating event follows the suicides of two other young women in the province just two weeks ago, attributed to domestic violence and crippling poverty. These cases are part of a larger crisis affecting women and girls across Afghanistan.

Forced marriages, domestic abuse, mental health issues, and the psychological toll of extreme poverty are among the leading drivers of suicides in Afghanistan, especially among women and girls. Since the Taliban’s return to power, economic hardship has intensified, straining countless families to the breaking point. The spike in poverty and unemployment has not only fractured families but also forced many to flee the country in search of refuge. Those left behind often face insurmountable despair, with some tragically seeing suicide as their only escape.

Despite the worsening humanitarian catastrophe, the Taliban have taken no substantive measures to address the escalating poverty or improve living conditions, leaving millions of Afghanistanis trapped in a cycle of suffering and hopelessness.
