Reports from Monday, November 18, reveal that Mawlawi Muqtada, the Taliban official in question, coerced a young woman into marrying him against her will. According to the sources, the woman and a young man had fled Pakistan and were subsequently arrested and imprisoned by the Taliban in Nangarhar. Mawlawi Muqtada reportedly released the young man under the condition of silence regarding the incident while unlawfully marrying the woman.
Further details suggest that Mawlawi Muqtada arranged a private residence for the woman in Jalalabad, where they are now living together. This act underscores the blatant double standards in the Taliban’s enforcement of their version of Islamic law. While the group publicly punishes women accused of fleeing their homes, its members have consistently violated these same laws without accountability.
Similar abuses have occurred in the past. For instance, a Taliban official in Takhar’s Chah Ab district also forcibly married a young woman under comparable circumstances. These actions expose the hypocrisy of the Taliban, where ordinary citizens are subject to severe interpretations of Islamic law, yet Taliban members exempt themselves from the same regulations, operating with impunity.
