RASC News Agency: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistani Women, issued a stern warning on X, stating, “Our patience with the Taliban is running out; the path to domestic and international legitimacy (for the Taliban) lies in upholding the rights of the Afghanistani people.” Amiri’s remarks come amid growing concerns that the Taliban continue to commit atrocities in Afghanistan, acting with impunity and disregarding the rights and dignity of Afghanistani citizens. The group has consistently imposed its will without considering the needs or desires of the people it claims to govern.
Amiri’s statement was made in response to the Taliban’s newly enacted law under the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. This law further restricts the lives of women, forcing them into primitive practices. According to this decree, a woman’s voice is deemed inappropriate (awrat), and she is forbidden from leaving her home or visiting public spaces without a male guardian (mahram). Previously, several women informed RASC News that the provisions of this Taliban law are primitive and violate the inherent dignity of women.
The U.S. Special Envoy had earlier mentioned in an interview with “The Hill” that any normalization of relations with the Taliban government would be contingent upon significant improvements in human rights and women’s rights in Afghanistan. However, this demand has yet to yield tangible results, as the Taliban remain unyielding, pursuing their agenda with little regard for external pressures.
Ms. Amiri had also emphasized that the U.S. would employ every possible tool to build global consensus and send a clear message to the Taliban. However, it remains unclear how the U.S. plans to exert sufficient pressure on the Taliban to ensure they comply with the demands of the Afghanistani people.
