RASC News Agency: Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has condemned the newly ratified Taliban law as “repugnant,” urging the world to raise its voice against it. In a statement on X, Clinton remarked, “This law is the product of extreme fundamentalism.” She added, “Do you want to see where radical fundamentalism leads? Look at the Taliban’s new law, which forbids women from speaking outside their homes.”
The newly ratified Taliban law has sparked sharp global and domestic reactions. Prominent figures, from cinema icon Angelina Jolie to high-ranking officials in Western countries and international organizations, have expressed strong disapproval. Germany’s Foreign Minister referred to the Taliban law as “114 pages of hatred towards Afghanistani women.”
Moreover, a statement issued by the UN Women’s Division expressed deep concern over the Taliban’s new “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law in Afghanistan, which imposes extensive restrictions on personal behavior and effectively removes women from public life. The Taliban, however, have dismissed these reactions, labeling them as “an affront to Sharia” and describing their critics as “disgraceful.”
The Taliban’s new law, titled “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice,” ratified by the Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, spans 114 pages and 35 articles, imposing new restrictions, particularly on the basic human rights and freedoms of women, and granting special powers to the law’s enforcement agents. The law deems women’s voices as “awrah” (to be concealed) and mandates that they not be heard, insisting on the complete covering of women’s faces and bodies. Despite widespread international criticism of the Taliban’s discriminatory and authoritarian practices and accusations against the Taliban regime for violating the rights of Afghanistanis, the Taliban remain unaffected, dismissing such criticism as “audacity.”
