Taliban Excluded from the 79th United Nations General Assembly

RASC News Agency: Suhail Shaheen, head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, announced that the group will not be able to participate in the 79th United Nations General Assembly scheduled for September this year. Shaheen stated that the United Nations has not opened the door for the Taliban to attend and participate in the upcoming General Assembly.

In an interview with Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti, Shaheen remarked that the Taliban have not yet secured Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations, despite numerous efforts that have yielded no results. Shaheen, the Taliban’s nominee for Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations, has been proposed to the organization on multiple occasions, but the UN has consistently refused to recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s official representative.

Nasir Ahmad Faiq, the diplomat appointed by the previous government, continues to serve as the acting head of Afghanistan’s permanent mission at the United Nations. Over the past three years, he has been a vocal critic of the Taliban regime. It is noteworthy that the United Nations Credentials Committee postponed its decision for the third time in December last year regarding the Taliban’s claim to Afghanistan’s seat.

The previous Taliban regime also failed to gain recognition from the United Nations or secure Afghanistan’s seat. The UN continues to regard the Taliban as an illegitimate group and has repeatedly called on them to respect women’s rights. The 78th United Nations General Assembly was held in September 2023, where the situation of Afghanistani women was a key topic on the agenda.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the Taliban’s violations of women’s rights in Afghanistan, describing them as a disgrace.
