Facebook Faces Blocking in Afghanistan

RASC News Agency: Najibullah Haqqani, the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology for the Taliban, has recently declared the finalization of the plan to block the social network Facebook in Afghanistan by the ministry.

In an interview with “Tolo News” on Saturday night, Apr 6, the Taliban’s Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology addressed this issue, noting that the youth of Afghanistan find themselves in circumstances where they lack a scientific perspective and are predominantly illiterate.

He further emphasized that despite this predicament, the youth continue to squander their time on social networks, thereby financially benefiting the company, which is detrimental to the nation. He affirmed that a policy has been formulated for this purpose, with the aim of restricting and blocking Facebook in Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s Minister of Telecommunications articulated these statements against the backdrop of “Meta,” the parent company of Facebook, disallowing this group from using the social network under US counterterrorism laws, leading to the blocking of accounts associated with the authorities and members of this group.

Throughout the Taliban’s reign over the country for more than two years, the group has imposed extensive restrictions on citizens’ access to independent and free media.
