RASC News Agency: The International Human Rights Service and the International Women’s League for Peace and Freedom have jointly petitioned the United Nations Human Rights Council in a letter addressing the urgent need for attention to the plight of women facing harassment and persecution by the Taliban. In a letter released on Tuesday, February 13th, these two organizations have called for the formal recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, urging a reduction in government interactions with the Taliban.
The correspondence highlights the Taliban’s restrictive decrees and “misogynistic” actions towards women, which have systematically marginalized them from public life, according to the organizations. They argue that recognizing gender apartheid is a means to pressure all governments and international organizations engaging with the Taliban to refrain from engaging with or appeasing the group.
The International Human Rights Service and the International Women’s League for Peace and Freedom further assert the need for global condemnation of the persecution and gender apartheid inflicted upon women in Afghanistan. This call comes amidst the Taliban’s persistent dismissal of domestic and international appeals for respecting the rights of Afghanistani women, claiming adherence to Sharia law and resisting change.
Throughout their more than two-year reign, the Taliban have been accused of widespread human rights violations, particularly against women and girls, stripping them of their freedom of expression and other fundamental liberties.
