RASC News Agency: U.S. Senator Eric Schmidt has articulated his apprehensions regarding China’s burgeoning influence in Afghanistan under the Taliban’s governance. Schmidt conveyed these sentiments on Wednesday, January 10, during his media statements, underscoring the existence of a significant U.S. airbase in Afghanistan—a focal point, he contends, of China’s current interest. Expanding on his remarks, Eric Schmidt asserted that America’s disengagement from Afghanistan constituted a catastrophic event, noting, “Now we witness the repercussions on a global scale.”
He contended that the Biden administration exhibited a notably feeble performance, laying bare the inconsiderate nature of the exit from Afghanistan. Pointing to the military assets abandoned by the U.S. army in Afghanistan, he observed that these resources are now wielded by those who subjugate others. In terms of China’s sway in Afghanistan, Schmidt stated, “We presently witness China amplifying its influence in Afghanistan, posing a significant concern. We once had an extensive airbase there, and now it has captured China’s attention.”
Senator Schmidt appended that the American populace desires more discourse on supporting human rights, women’s rights, and freedom of expression in Afghanistan. It is noteworthy that earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that the United States should retain control of Bagram Air Base north of Kabul after its withdrawal from Afghanistan. He declared that, if victorious in the election, he would reclaim it.
