RASC News Agency: On Monday, July 22, local sources informed RASC that a man committed suicide in the Angorbagh area of Jalalabad city the previous day. The economic hardships, exacerbated by the Taliban’s rule, drove this man to end his life. Daily, economic struggles, poverty, and unemployment claim the lives of individuals across the country. The Taliban are considered the primary cause of widespread poverty and unemployment in society.
Before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, employment opportunities were available to many, and the rates of poverty-related suicides were low. However, the current situation is drastically different. Since the Taliban’s takeover, unemployment has become widespread, poverty is rampant, and the resulting hardships are driving people to end their lives. Unemployment and poverty are major issues that continue to claim the lives of Afghanistani citizens. Both have increased significantly among the population since the Taliban assumed power, leaving many families struggling for their daily bread.
The Taliban’s rule over Afghanistan has stripped everything from the people, leaving them only with poverty and hunger. Since gaining control, the Taliban have focused on personal gains, extortion, violence, and forced marriages, neglecting the plight of the population suffering from extreme poverty and facing death. The Taliban consider themselves the conquerors of Afghanistan, engaging in hidden and overt killings and abuses, believing their actions to be justified and beyond reproach.
Sources from Nangarhar report that the man who recently committed suicide was named Gul Agha. These sources add that he threw himself into a water canal. Previously, another individual in Kunduz ended his life by jumping into a well. Jumping into wells or water canals is seen as an easy method of suicide, which is why many opt for this means to escape their miserable lives.
According to sources, Gul Agha had two wives and ten children. Now, his entire family is left without support, as poverty claimed the life of their household’s head. The Taliban in Nangarhar have not commented on this incident. Three weeks ago, another newly married young man in this province also took his life by jumping into a river due to economic problems.
