RASC News Agency: Residents of Nimruz province are expressing grievances regarding the chronic shortage of clean water in the region. Noor Mohammad Mahmoudi, a resident of Nimruz province, voiced concerns to a RASC reporter on Friday, December 22nd, underscoring that the scarcity of clean water has endured in the province for an extended period, subjecting the populace to dire circumstances. He added, “Nimruz residents have spent numerous days grappling with the shortage of clean water, compelled to purchase a 20-liter water container for 40 to 50 kabuli rupees, the local currency.”
Mahmoudi further elucidates that a tanker of clean water is available in Nimruz province markets for 1,500 kabuli rupees, imposing an additional burden on the community as they strive to procure water for their survival. Meanwhile, Farouq Azami, another Nimruz resident, informed RASC that the people of this province had hoped the inauguration of the Kajaki Dam would resolve water scarcity issues and alleviate existing concerns. However, the narrative of water shortage persists. He adds that Nimruz residents stand for hours to obtain drinking water, emphasizing the profound impact of this trend on public sentiment and the multitude of challenges it poses to community life.
Furthermore, Dawood Rahmani, a civil activist in western Afghanistan, told RASC News Agency that the shortage of clean water has subjected the people to the worst living conditions for years. He adds that numerous authorities, both past and present, have made numerous promises regarding resolving water scarcity issues for the people, yet these commitments have not materialized into practical solutions. Mr. Rahmani urges officials to prioritize addressing the water scarcity issue in Nimruz and implement an effective mechanism to alleviate this problem.
However, the Taliban authorities in Nimruz province have not issued any statements on this matter so far. It is noteworthy that promises have been made by figures ranging from the fugitive Afghanistani president to the leaders of the Taliban group, pledging substantial efforts to alleviate the water scarcity problems in Nimruz province. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how these assurances will be fulfilled over time.
