RASC News Agency: More than two years have elapsed since the Taliban assumed control of the nation, and to this day, no country in the world has recognized their authority. The spokesperson for the US State Department recently highlighted that the international community’s official recognition of the Taliban hinges upon the group’s policies concerning the people of Afghanistan.
During a media briefing, Matthew Miller, speaking on behalf of the US government, stressed that America’s criteria for acknowledging the Taliban’s legitimacy include the promotion of human rights and ensuring women’s access to education. The United States maintains active engagement with numerous Afghanistani citizens both inside and outside the country.
Furthermore, this senior US State Department representative expressed support for extending the mandate of Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan. Miller emphasized that they closely monitor Bennett’s work and regard his reports as invaluable sources of information regarding the state of human rights in Afghanistan. He underscored the significance of upholding human rights and ensuring women’s and girls’ access to education, stating that their empowerment in terms of employment and education will enable them to contribute significantly to Afghanistani society. Mr. Miller emphatically asserted that empowering women and girls to regain their right to work occupies a prominent place in America’s priorities and obligations toward Afghanistan.
It is worth noting, however, that several American officials have declared that the Taliban has not fulfilled any of its obligations to uphold human rights, particularly women’s rights. Notably, since assuming power, the Taliban has consistently denied Afghanistani women and girls their fundamental rights, including the right to work and education. The actions of the Taliban towards Afghan women have elicited widespread condemnation from global authorities, with nations repeatedly urging the group to revise its policies towards women and girls. The Taliban has yet to demonstrate any positive response to these appeals.
