RASC News Agency:The European Union, in its ongoing commitment to supporting the people of Afghanistan, has once again demonstrated aid package of 10 million euros. This aid will be specifically allocated to the World Health Organization and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, with the primary objective of addressing the prevailing challenges of mental health and drug-related disorders in Afghanistan. The World Health Organization, on Wednesday, October 25, formally announced the allocation of this aid.
Rafaela Edis, the head of the European Union’s mission in Afghanistan, underscored the vital significance of providing accessible community health services to individuals grappling with mental health issues and drug-related disorders. Moreover, Luda Ping, the head of the World Health Organization office in Afghanistan, expressed sincere gratitude for the unwavering support extended by the European Union. She emphasized that this aid will play an instrumental role in facilitating their collective endeavors to effectively combat the intricacies and obstacles in the realms of mental health and the prevalence of drug abuse. The timing of this aid is particularly critical, given that approximately four million people in Afghanistan are currently battling addiction and urgently require treatment.
It is important to note that the European Union had previously announced a separate aid package of 20 million dollars to provide assistance in preparing for the winter season in Afghanistan. Despite assertions made by the Taliban group regarding their provision of treatment for drug addicts, it has been observed that individuals who undergo such treatment often experience relapses and return to substance abuse. Experts attribute the alarmingly high rates of addiction to various factors, including pervasive unemployment and pervasive poverty, which contribute to the vulnerability of individuals throughout the country.
