RASC News Agency: The former Canada ambassador to Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, said that the recent re-invasions of Afghanistan by the Taliban are a cause for concern, especially for women in the country.

On Sunday night October 1, CBC News reported that Deborah Lyons told a Canadian newspaper that she wants her country to work with the people in Afghanistan and not just leave them on their own.

She added: “Finding the way forward is a struggle; but we have to continue it.”

Lyons, who was Canada’s ambassador to Afghanistan from 2013 to 2016 and the United Nations Secretary General’s special representative for Afghanistan from 2020 to 2022, noted that the situation of people, especially women, in Afghanistan is disappointing.

Lyons also said that during the two years of their rule in Afghanistan, the Taliban group has always suppressed ethnic groups, continued to arrest, and even kill former soldiers.

This Canadian diplomat called for interaction with the Taliban and added: “You can meet them, work with them, talk with them, and try to find ways to help the Afghanistani people.”

After assuming power in Afghanistan, the Taliban imposed restrictions and oppressive conditions on the population of Afghanistan. The group ruled by a particular tribe in Afghanistan. Girls and women were not allowed to study or work. The group arrested and killed people and women’s rights activists.
