RASC News Agency: Hannah Newman, a member of the European Parliament, says that Matiullah Wisa, Marzia Amiri and Parasto Hakim, three activists in the field of education from Afghanistan, have been nominated for the 2023 Sakharov Prize.
Newman wrote on X channel on Thursday, September 14, that education activists have organized secret schools, go to remote areas and manage distance education.
She wrote that many education activists are resisting the Taliban’s attacks on education.
This member of the European Parliament added: “I and more than 50 other members of the parliament decided to nominate three of them (education activists) for the 2023 Sakharov Prize.”
The Sakharov Prize was established in 1988 to honor individuals and organizations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.
This annual award is named in honor of Andrei Sakharov, a former Soviet physicist and political dissident, and symbolizes the European Union’s highest tribute to defenders of human rights and freedom of thought.
According to Hannah Newman, this year from Afghanistan, Parasto Hakim, Marzia Amiri and Matiullah Wisa are nominated for the Sakharov Prize.
She said that Parasto Hakim is the founder of secret schools and now he is organizing an organization called “SAARC” from exile.
Also, according to Newman, Marzia Amiri runs a secret school and online training courses after escaping from Afghanistan.
Likewise, Matiullah Wisa, the founder of “Rah Qalam” organization, has been trying to provide education to children in remote areas for many years. He is now in the prison of the Taliban group.
Newman added that the Taliban group imprisoned Wisa for the “crime” of supporting children’s education.
