RASC: According to a new report published by the United Nations, this organization has called for an investigation of the Taliban group’s behavior with women as “sexual harassment and an example of a crime against humanity.”
On Friday, this organization asked the governments to use their international judicial powers to try to punish the Taliban group involved in the violation of women’s rights.
Amnesty International also asked the prosecutors of the International Court to investigate the harassment of Afghanistani women by the Taliban group.
In this 62-page report prepared in collaboration with the International Commission of Jurists, numerous cases of serious violations of women’s rights have been documented.
In this report, cases such as imprisonment, torture, disappearance and misbehavior of the Taliban with women mentioned.
According to an Amnesty International statement, Santiago Canton, Secretary General of the International Commission of Jurists, said: “The campaign of gender-based harassment of Afghanistani women is widespread, severe and systematic… It aims to subjugate and marginalize women and girls in its all over the country.”
He added: “Our report shows that this persecution by the Taliban meets the five necessary criteria to be classified as a crime against humanity.”
Agnes Callamar, Secretary General of Amnesty International, referring to the policies of the Taliban group, said that “this war is against Afghanistani women” and that this group wants to turn women into second-class citizens.
In this report, the Taliban group’s treatment of protesting women who demanded their rights and removal of gender discrimination is also mentioned.
According to Amnesty International, the Taliban arrested these women and made some of them disappear.
The organization says that the protesting women “were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment during their detention and were forced to sign (forced) confessions” and before being released from prison, they pledged to stop protesting under pressure.
Afghanistan is part of the International Criminal Court and this court can try Taliban officials accused of crimes against humanity.
However, it is not yet clear whether prosecutors will recognize the Taliban’s policies against Afghanistani women and girls as crimes against humanity.
Amnesty International has tried to make this report the basis for dealing with the Taliban group by governments and international organizations regarding the situation of women in Afghanistan.
Amnesty International has suggested that the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan discussed in the framework of international law at the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.
