Afghanistan Plunges Deeper into Fear as Targeted Killings Escalate: Young Law Graduate Shot Dead in Kabul

RASC News Agency: Amid an increasingly volatile security landscape in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, a disturbing rise in targeted killings and suspicious attacks is spreading fear and anxiety across the nation. In the latest incident, a 24-year-old man was gunned down late at night by unknown armed assailants in Police District 8 of Kabul. The murder, which took place under the cloak of darkness, underscores the mounting lawlessness that has gripped the country. Local sources informed RASC News that the victim, a recent graduate from the Faculty of Law, had no political affiliations and harbored no known personal enmities. According to family members, he was a quiet and diligent young man with aspirations of contributing to justice in Afghanistan. Yet, in a cruel irony, he became a casualty of the very insecurity he had hoped to fight against.

Two nights have passed since the murder, but Taliban security forces have remained conspicuously silent. No official statement has been issued, no investigation has been announced, and no suspects have been identifiedcemphasizing the regime’s deepening failure to deliver even the most basic functions of law enforcement. Meanwhile, in another deadly episode, sources in Herat province report that on May 18, a senior member of the Taliban’s Air Force Command was killed by unidentified gunmen in Zinda Jan district. As in the Kabul case, the attack was shrouded in ambiguity. Witnesses say the assailants not only shot the victim dead but also looted his weapon, mobile phone, and vehicle before fleeing the scene.

These incidents are not isolated. Across the country, citizens are raising alarm over a sharp rise in armed robberies, unexplained assassinations, and the overall climate of terror. Despite repeated Taliban claims of having established “nationwide security,” facts on the ground tell a starkly different story: Afghanistan is descending into a state of unchecked lawlessness, where state institutions are paralyzed and violence remains unpunished. Security experts warn that the Taliban’s makeshift and ideologically driven governance lacks the institutional sophistication and legal apparatus necessary to prevent or investigate such crimes. Their wholesale purging of trained personnel from the former republic’s security and judicial institutions has created a vacuum one now filled by impunity, criminality, and fear.

“The Taliban’s security structure is neither professional nor accountable,” said an Afghanistani security analyst who requested anonymity due to safety concerns. “There is no transparency, no justice system, and no rule of law. What exists is a shadow government that rules by decree, suppresses dissent, and turns a blind eye to the growing tide of violence.” Worse still, the Taliban’s rigid ideological agenda and refusal to collaborate with international human rights monitors have only deepened the crisis. Citizens now live in a state of constant insecurity, where justice is arbitrary and silence is survival. The regime’s persistent failure to address these killings whether due to incompetence, neglect, or complicity has further eroded public trust. As families bury their loved ones, they are left without answers, without justice, and without hope.
