RASC News Agency: The Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan has announced that a high-ranking delegation, led by Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan and head of the Council’s Political Committee arrived today, Monday, April 28, in the Islamic Republic of Iran for an official diplomatic visit. Accompanying him are several prominent figures within the Resistance Council, including Haji Almas Zahid, head of the Peace Committee; Khwaja Mahboob Siddiqi, representative of the Jamiat-e-Islami Party; Mawlawi Abdullah Qarluq, deputy leader of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan; and Habiburrahman Sayyaf, representative of the Islamic Dawat Party and member of the Council’s Leadership Committee.
The principal objective of this visit is to hold consultations with Iranian officials concerning the condition of Afghanistani refugees residing in Iran. Expressing deep appreciation for Iran’s decades-long humanitarian support to Afghanistan’s displaced populations, the Supreme Council underscored its hope that the visit would lead to concrete measures to improve the livelihoods of refugees, safeguard their human rights, and strengthen bilateral cooperation on humanitarian issues. At present, Iran hosts one of the world’s largest populations of Afghanistani refugees, with estimates suggesting that millions both documented and undocumented live across various Iranian cities and provinces. Despite significant humanitarian efforts in areas such as education, healthcare, and shelter, Afghanistani refugees continue to face a wide range of challenges, including restricted access to public services, precarious legal status, economic hardships, and occasional discriminatory practices.
The Supreme Council emphasized its commitment to presenting actionable proposals to Iranian authorities aimed at better regulating refugee affairs, expanding legal and social protections, and ensuring dignified, sustainable living conditions for Afghanistani refugees. The Council stressed that addressing the humanitarian plight of these refugees is not only a moral imperative but also a critical element in preserving regional stability in light of the ongoing turmoil in Afghanistan. This diplomatic engagement comes against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s escalating humanitarian catastrophe under Taliban rule, whose oppressive policies have driven millions into exile. Since their return to power, the Taliban have systematically dismantled civil liberties, suppressed ethnic and religious minorities, curtailed women’s rights, and plunged the nation into profound economic despair. As a result, the refugee crisis has worsened dramatically, making regional cooperation essential.
By strengthening ties with Iran and advocating for the protection of displaced Afghanistanis, the Supreme Council seeks to reaffirm its role as a legitimate political and moral alternative to the Taliban’s despotic regime a force committed to upholding the rights, dignity, and future of the Afghanistani people. According to the Council’s statement, further details regarding the meetings, discussions, and outcomes of the delegation’s visit will be disclosed in the coming days.
