Former Military Officer: ‘I Live in Perpetual Fear Under Taliban Rule’

RASC News Agency: A former Afghanistan’s military officer has reported that he was brutally beaten by Taliban forces in Kabul. On Tuesday, he shared photographic evidence of his injuries with the media, revealing visible signs of torture, including deep bruises and lash marks across his body. Speaking on the condition of anonymity due to security concerns, he disclosed that he was arrested on January 5 in the Campany district of Kabul and later released on bail after several days in detention. During his captivity, he endured severe physical abuse at the hands of the Taliban.

“I live in a constant state of fear and terror,” he stated, warning that former military personnel remain at extreme risk. He accused the Taliban of systematically executing, imprisoning, and torturing many of his fellow soldiers and called upon international organizations, particularly the United Nations and human rights groups, to take immediate action. He also condemned leaders of Afghanistan’s former government for abandoning the country and leaving them defenseless in such dire circumstances.

Furthermore, he urged Western nations, which were once allies of Afghanistan’s previous government, to fulfill their commitments to former military officers. In recent years, international organizations, including the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), have repeatedly documented the arbitrary arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings of ex-military personnel. Most recently, UNAMA confirmed that it has compiled extensive evidence of these human rights violations.

Despite mounting reports, the Taliban continue to insist that all former military officers were granted amnesty and face no persecution. However, credible evidence indicates that over the past three and a half years, thousands of individuals have been arbitrarily detained by the Taliban under various pretexts.
