RASC News Agency: Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that Beijing has demanded the Taliban conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of a Chinese national in Takhar province, identify the perpetrators, and ensure their prosecution. Mao expressed China’s profound shock over the incident, condemning it in the strongest terms. During a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, Mao underscored that the Chinese embassy in Kabul is actively following up on the case. She assured that the embassy remains steadfast in its efforts to protect the legal rights, interests, and safety of Chinese nationals residing in Afghanistan.
The victim, identified as “Li,” was killed on the evening of Tuesday, January 21, in the Khwaja Bahawuddin district of Takhar province. The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack. Mohammad Akbar Haqan, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Takhar police command, stated that the Chinese national, accompanied by his translator, had left their office without informing either their organization or local security officials. Tragically, they were ambushed and killed by unknown assailants while traveling through the Dasht-e-Qala region of Takhar. The Taliban have announced the commencement of an investigation into the murder. According to sources, Taliban intelligence authorities have detained and are interrogating the victim’s driver and translator.
China’s renewed focus on Afghanistan’s vast mineral reserves has fostered a close and cooperative relationship with the Taliban since the group’s return to power in August 2021. However, incidents like this could strain these ties, as Beijing is likely to demand heightened accountability and assurances for the safety of its citizens in the region.
