RASC News Agency: In response to the widespread detentions of Afghanistani refugees in Pakistan, the Human Rights Activists Union has stated that Afghanistani refugees in the country are victims of the Taliban’s oppressive policies. On Wednesday, January 8, the Union released a statement expressing concern over the situation of Afghanistani refugees in Islamabad and calling for an immediate end to the detentions. The statement reads: “We stress that refugees in Pakistan are victims of the cruelty and violence inflicted by the Taliban terrorist group. Their unlawful detention and mistreatment are in direct violation of Islamic principles, international law, and Pakistan’s humanitarian obligations.”
The Union further called on the Pakistani government to immediately cease the detentions, respect human dignity, and prevent the recurrence of such actions. Similarly, Amnesty International has urged Pakistan to halt the detention of Afghanistani refugees without conditions. Despite these calls, Pakistani authorities have insisted that they are only detaining and deporting individuals who lack legal documentation. However, numerous reports reveal that hundreds of refugees, including those with valid documents and visas, have been detained and forcibly expelled.
These refugees are being expelled even though the majority fled Afghanistan to escape the Taliban’s return to power, seeking safety. Their forced deportation could expose them to the risk of persecution or death at the hands of the Taliban. Multiple reports indicate that the Taliban has detained and executed individuals who have been forcibly returned from Iran and Pakistan.
