Tajikistan and China Discuss Afghanistan: Regional Security in Focus

RASC News Agency: Yu Xiaoyong, China’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, held a meeting with Sharaf Rahimi, the Head of the Strategic Studies Department at Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In a recent post on his X account, Yu described the dialogue as highly productive, emphasizing their shared commitment to facilitating Afghanistan’s reconstruction and regional stability. According to a statement from Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions underscored the importance of fostering open dialogue, deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and maintaining regular exchanges to advance regional peace and sustainable development. Both sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in strengthening ties and emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts to address shared challenges.

The meeting took place in a constructive and amicable atmosphere, reflecting the strong partnership between the two nations. However, Tajikistan continues to face significant security threats emanating from Afghanistan. The Taliban regime harbors numerous terrorist groups, many of which pose a direct threat to Central Asia. Among these groups, the Tajikistan-based Ansarullah has become a pressing concern. With full financial and military backing from the Taliban, Ansarullah operatives are stationed along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. Over the past three years, several members of this group have attempted to cross into Tajikistan but were intercepted and neutralized.

Despite a shared understanding among Central Asian nations about the Taliban’s destabilizing ambitions, responses have varied. Some states have chosen to engage with the Taliban, offering concessions in hopes of mitigating threats. In contrast, Tajikistan has resolutely rejected such approaches. From the outset, it has stood firmly against appeasement, aligning itself with the Afghanistani people and advocating for a collective effort to combat regional insecurity. Tajikistan’s unwavering stance underscores its commitment to regional peace and its determination to resist any efforts to undermine the security of Central Asia.
