RASC News Agency: The Human Rights Activists’ Alliance has applauded the referral of Afghanistan’s human rights violations to the International Criminal Court (ICC), stressing that expecting the Taliban to uphold international conventions is “a mere illusion.” The alliance underscored that the time has come for the Taliban leadership to face prosecution for their systematic violations of human rights. It argued that three years of engagement have demonstrated that interaction with the group has only deepened the suffering of the Afghanistani population.
Last week, six nations formally submitted a case concerning the violation of women’s rights in Afghanistan to the ICC. The court acknowledged receipt of the case and announced the commencement of investigations into human rights abuses, with a specific focus on violations against women. The alliance expressed hope for a swift and impartial investigation, free from political interference. The organization urged the United Nations and human rights-supporting countries to endorse the ICC referral and provide all necessary resources to ensure the prosecutor’s ability to conduct thorough investigations.
The alliance condemned lobbying efforts by the United States, Russia, China, Pakistan, and Iran, which propagated the narrative that the Taliban had reformed and could be influenced through negotiation. However, the Taliban’s actions have dispelled such notions, revealing a regression into even greater tyranny and retrogression compared to their past. The alliance further emphasized that the Taliban’s growing arrogance is a direct result of consistent financial injections and intelligence briefings provided by the United States during monthly meetings in Qatar. This unwavering support, it argued, has emboldened the group, making them more resolute in their oppressive and regressive policies.
