RASC News Agency: Local sources in Ghazni report that the Taliban publicly flogged a man and a woman in the province on charges of “illicit relations.” The Taliban’s Supreme Court, in a statement released today Monday, confirmed that these two individuals had been flogged in Ghazni. According to the statement, the woman was sentenced to 39 lashes and five years in prison, while the man received 39 lashes and a one-year prison sentence.
This follows previous instances in which the Taliban flogged two men in the Kabul and Nangarhar provinces. Reports indicate that, over the past ten days, nearly 50 people across various provinces including Kabul, Nangarhar, Logar, and Herat have been publicly flogged by the Taliban. Since their return to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have consistently enforced corporal punishment, frequently subjecting citizens to public floggings for a range of alleged offenses. The Taliban leader has issued directives supporting the continued use of these public punishments for the accused.
International human rights organizations, including the United Nations and Afghanistani women’s advocacy networks, have repeatedly called for an end to corporal punishment by the Taliban. Despite these appeals, the Taliban persist in carrying out public floggings and have detained numerous individuals nationwide under various accusations, often without due process. This practice has sparked widespread public outrage, with many alleging that the Taliban detain and punish individuals arbitrarily and without recourse to fair justice.
