RASC News Agency: Under the administration of the Taliban, Bakhtar News Agency has reported that, for the first time, surgery for deaf and mute individuals was successfully performed by an Afghanistani specialist in Kabul. According to the report, the surgery cost approximately 700,000 kabuli rupees.
Furthermore, the report from Bakhtar News Agency, which is controlled by the Taliban, also highlights the involvement of a female Afghanistani doctor who participated in the procedure alongside a male specialist. This development occurs despite the Taliban’s ongoing ban on girls above the sixth grade attending school. Additionally, women are prohibited from enrolling in universities, including healthcare-related faculties.
Previously, humanitarian and human rights organizations have voiced concern about the critical shortage of female doctors in Afghanistan’s healthcare system. Najib-ur-Rahman Hanif, the specialist who performed the surgery, explained, “We conduct two types of surgeries: one for individuals born with hearing impairments, and another for those who become deaf after learning to speak.”
Despite these efforts, dozens of patients travel daily to neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan, seeking medical care. The Taliban, as a tribal and archaic group, place no value on the rights or dignity of women. Over the past three years of their rule, they have consistently demonstrated that, in their view, a woman’s role is confined to childbearing and household chores. Nevertheless, Afghanistani women have continually proven their remarkable resilience and capabilities, regardless of the oppressive conditions imposed upon them.
