Former Pakistani Envoy: I Hope the Taliban Heed Moscow Format’s Recommendations

RASC News Agency: Asif Durrani, Pakistan’s former envoy to Afghanistan, emphasized the importance of the joint statement issued at the Moscow Format Consultative Meeting on Afghanistan and urged the Taliban to act on its recommendations, particularly in addressing the presence of terrorist groups taking refuge in Afghanistan. Representatives at the meeting expressed serious concerns over the activities of these terrorist and separatist groups within Afghanistan borders.

The joint statement from the participating countries noted that “terrorist and separatist groups based in Afghanistan continue to present a significant threat to regional and global security.” The Moscow Format Consultative Meeting, held on Friday, October 4, brought together representatives from Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Taliban.

Durrani expressed hope that the Taliban would listen to the recommendations of these countries. However, the Taliban, like many other intelligence-driven terrorist organizations, have their own objectives and are committed to fulfilling them within the region. The very nations that once supported the Taliban and advanced with them to the gates of the presidential palace should have anticipated this current situation. How could they expect that a group, which fought for years alongside multiple terrorist factions against the people of Afghanistan, would now easily abandon those same allies or submit to the interests of these nations? History has shown that the Taliban are unlikely to sever ties with their former allies so readily.
