RASC News Agency: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistani Women, declared during a United Nations session that the Taliban’s latest restrictions on women demonstrate the group’s regression to the oppressive policies of its previous regime. The United Nations hosted a side event on Tuesday to address the deepening crisis surrounding women’s rights in Afghanistan. In her remarks, Amiri underscored that the Taliban initially promised to uphold women’s rights but have instead reneged on their commitments, deceiving the women of Afghanistan.
Amiri explained that while the Taliban first claimed to be dedicated to protecting women’s rights, they steadily abandoned these pledges, recharacterizing the restrictions on women as a domestic issue. She noted: “In the beginning, they assured the world they wouldn’t return to the repressive policies of the 1990s, promising to respect the rights of Afghanistani women and girls. At first, they blamed financial, security, and logistical constraints for the limitations imposed on women, but now they dismiss these issues as internal matters.”
Amiri also warned that the Taliban’s regressive policies are having a ripple effect beyond Afghanistan’s borders. She stressed that many extremist groups globally are closely monitoring the Taliban’s actions, seeking to replicate them, and are carefully observing the international community’s response. “We are witnessing this dynamic in regions outside Afghanistan, such as Yemen and Syria,” she emphasized. “I’ve spoken with counterparts in Pakistan who are already sensing the impact of these policies.”
Amiri urged for intensified international efforts to safeguard the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, stressing that global action must increase to counteract the growing repression.
