The Washington Post: Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue Acquires Unprecedented Power to Suppress the Public

RASC News Agency: “The Washington Post” reports that the Taliban have intensified their suppression of Afghanistani 0/women through the enforcement of their new law, “The Law on Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice,” particularly in urban areas of Afghanistan. The report highlights that following the enactment of this law, the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue has acquired “unprecedented power” in Kabul and other cities to impose severe penalties.

The newspaper details that the presence of Taliban morality enforcers has significantly increased in public spaces and on streets throughout Kabul and other cities since the law’s implementation. These enforcers are now patrolling bus stations and various public areas, targeting women who fail to adhere to the Taliban’s prescribed dress code or who laugh or speak loudly in public.

The “Post” also reveals that many women, in telephone interviews, have reported losing all hope for any change in the Taliban’s policies towards women. Since their return to power, the Taliban have systematically deprived women of their fundamental human rights and imposed stringent restrictions on other civil liberties and freedoms.

Under this new law, the Taliban have classified a woman’s face as part of her ‘awrah’ (body parts that must be covered) and mandated that women cover their faces and bodies entirely in public. This draconian measure, along with the new law, has provoked widespread domestic and international outrage. However, the Taliban have shown no intention of altering their oppressive policies toward the Afghanistani populace, especially women.
