The Guardian: “Do Not Embolden the Taliban!”

RASC News Agency: In an editorial titled “Afghanistan’s Gender Apartheid: Do Not Embolden the Taliban,” “The Guardian” denounces the Taliban’s rule over Afghanistan as a “cruel and humiliating blow” to the rights and dignity of the nation’s women and girls. The piece further characterizes the Taliban as an “existential threat” to the women and girls of Afghanistan.

“The Guardian” emphasizes that under the Taliban’s regime, women have been deprived of their freedom, dignity, and livelihoods, urging the international community to respond to their plight. The publication underscores that the Taliban’s systematic eradication of women’s livelihoods and their enforced dependency on “unfit male guardians” are deliberate strategies designed to obliterate women’s rights.

The editorial asserts, “What is even more tragic is that Afghanistani women and girls are not only being coerced into submission by the Taliban but are also being forsaken by those who pledged to support them—the international community.” “The Guardian” highlights that the Taliban’s ban on women working in most roles within aid organizations has resulted in many women in Afghanistan being unable to access assistance due to gender segregation. The editorial calls upon the global community to ensure that women’s voices are central in any discussions regarding Afghanistan’s future.

This warning from “The Guardian” regarding the Taliban’s draconian policies comes at a time when the United States stands as the regime’s largest financial and political supporter on the global stage. Without the billions of dollars in aid from the U.S., the Taliban government would not endure even a month. Yet, the U.S. has not only become the Taliban’s reliable financier but also actively dissuades neighboring countries and military adversaries of the Taliban from taking armed action against the group.
