McCaul: Fall of Afghanistan and U.S. Withdrawal Escalated ISIS Operations

RASC News Agency: Michael McCaul, Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, has asserted that the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan led to the escape of thousands of terrorists from “Bagram Airbase” prisons, resulting in a surge in ISIS activities abroad. In an interview with CBS News, McCaul criticized the Biden administration’s foreign policy, suggesting it has created opportunities for terrorist groups like ISIS to target the United States.

He stated, “Following the fall of Afghanistan, numerous ISIS operatives escaped from Bagram prisons and ultimately settled in regions across Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan.” The Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee further remarked, “ISIS-K is infiltrating the United States through Mexico, raising the question: how many of them are already here?” He noted that ISIS-K has increased its activities significantly.

This statement comes after reports from U.S. media earlier in June indicated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had arrested eight individuals in the United States on charges of ISIS affiliation. Previously, CNN reported, citing several U.S. officials, that the arrest of several Tajikistani citizens suspected of ISIS membership had heightened concerns about the potential threat of an attack by individuals affiliated with the group on U.S. soil.

The CNN report added that the specifics of these individuals’ membership in ISIS remain unclear, and there is no concrete evidence suggesting they were sent to the United States as part of a “terrorist conspiracy.” It is worth noting that Republicans have repeatedly criticized Democrats for failing to prevent the entry of refugees through Latin America into the United States. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee in the upcoming U.S. elections, has pledged to complete the border wall with Mexico if he wins the November election.

Since the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, attacks by terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, TTP, and ISIS have increased in various regions.
