RASC News Agency: The Afghanistan Journalists Center has announced that the Taliban’s Directorate of Information and Culture in Kandahar province has ordered the eviction of the province’s Independent Journalists Club office. According to a press release issued on Monday, July 8, by the Afghanistan Journalists Center, the Taliban’s Directorate of Information and Culture in Kandahar has reclaimed the office used by the province’s Independent Journalists Club.
The press release states that the Taliban’s Directorate has demanded that journalists vacate the office that was allocated to them over ten years ago. The statement, citing sources from Kandahar, reveals that the eviction order was communicated to the representative of the province’s Journalists Club, forcing journalists to leave the premises. The Taliban’s Directorate of Information and Culture in Kandahar claims it faces a shortage of space and plans to repurpose the hall for a museum.
Journalists in Kandahar have expressed that since the Taliban’s takeover, working restrictions and economic difficulties for the media community have intensified, and they found the existence of this office beneficial. They mentioned that the Kandahar Press Club is an independent local institution established in 2009 to assist and coordinate efforts for journalists in the province.
Meanwhile, restrictions on journalists and media activities imposed by the Taliban continue to escalate daily. In a recent move, the Taliban’s intelligence agency shut down the local radio station “Kawun Ghag” in Laghman province.
