RASC News Agency: Sources from Nimroz province report that heat, thirst, and hunger have claimed the lives of at least 34 drug addicts in the region. Sources disclosed to the media on Monday, July 18, that these individuals perished in various areas of Zaranj, the provincial capital, over the past week.
According to sources, severe conditions of hunger, heat, and thirst led to the deaths of these addicts. The Taliban’s municipal authorities in Nimroz province have confirmed the deaths of these individuals and have collected their bodies after notifying local authorities. Media reports indicate that a month ago, 50 drug addicts in Nimroz province lost their lives under similar circumstances.
These reports come amid Taliban claims of rounding up drug addicts across the country. Furthermore, emerging reports suggest that during the collection of addicts, Taliban members engage in violent behavior, including torture and occasional killings. International monitoring organizations have reported a significant increase in drug prices across various provinces since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, reports also reveal that Taliban-run addiction treatment centers subject drug addicts to brutal treatment, including torture and severe beatings. Lack of awareness about the harmful effects of drug use, lack of employment opportunities for citizens, particularly in provinces where drug cultivation is prevalent, are cited as reasons behind the proliferation of this phenomenon.
