Taliban Destroys Muharram Flags in Herat

RASC News Agency: Local sources from Herat province report that Taliban forces have dismantled and torn apart flags and slogans that Shia Muslims had installed for the month of Muharram in the region. Sources sent video footage to the media on Monday, July 8, showing individuals pulling down flags, with sources adding that those involved were Taliban members.

This action occurred despite Taliban authorities in Kabul and Herat provinces previously asserting they would ensure security for Shia mourning ceremonies during the month of Muharram. A source from Herat stated, “They promised to secure Shia ceremonies so they could proceed peacefully. How does tearing down our flags contribute to security?”

He added, “The security commander and Taliban governor claim they will guarantee your safety; then who are the individuals tearing down our flags?” Meanwhile, according to sources, Taliban moral police officers in Herat city collected Ashura flags that had been displayed on shops and houses, warning people they were prohibited from displaying such flags.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns as the Taliban, since seizing control of the country, have consistently violated the rights of minorities, particularly non-Pashtuns, without being held accountable by any entity or individual. Earlier reports from Ghazni city indicated Taliban members in the province had imposed restrictions on conducting Muharram ceremonies.
