Amiri: Taliban’s Ban on Girls’ Education Shatters Dreams

RASC News Agency: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistani Women, Girls, and Human Rights, stated that the Taliban’s policy of banning girls from education has “shattered” the dreams of Afghanistani girls. Amiri expressed these views on Thursday, June 13, in a message on the social media platform X, adding that the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education has “devastated” the country’s future.

She stated, “Afghanistan under Taliban rule remains the only country in the world where such extreme policies are enforced, leaving it isolated.” The U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistani Women, Girls, and Human Rights has previously commented on the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education. In an earlier statement this year, Amiri remarked that the closure of girls’ schools above sixth grade by the Taliban is a “heartbreaking” issue.

Amiri noted that the Taliban’s “relentless and discriminatory” edicts against women and girls have left Afghanistan impoverished and dependent on aid. It has been nearly 1,000 days since the Taliban first issued their ban on girls’ education above the sixth grade, and almost 600 days since universities were closed to female students.

The Taliban’s ban on girls’ education during their nearly three years in power has elicited widespread condemnation, yet they remain unaccountable for these actions.
