RASC News Agency: The Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany has announced a €15 million contribution, equivalent to $16.4 million, to Afghanistan under the United Nations World Food Programme. In a press release on Monday evening, March 25th, the World Food Programme stated that Germany has provided €15 million in aid to Afghanistan, following its previous assistance of €78 million in 2023.
The program added in the release that Germany’s new contributions will be directed towards enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities and supporting the school feeding program for Afghanistani students. Katarina Speis, Head of Crisis Management, Reconstruction, and Transitional Development Division at the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, emphasized her country’s solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.
She further added that these aids aim to invest in the food security of children and lay the groundwork for their prosperous future amidst humanitarian crises. Meanwhile, Hsiao-Wei Lee, Country Director of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, highlighted the importance of strengthening the food system in food-insecure communities, emphasizing that droughts, floods, and other natural disasters disproportionately affect vulnerable communities.
The World Food Programme Director, considering Germany’s assistance, added that the program supports farmers and female-headed households. She also mentioned that Germany’s €15 million contribution could employ 22,000 individuals in construction activities, provide food assistance to 150,000 people, and ensure nutritious meals for 190,000 students.
It is noteworthy that the World Food Programme stated that Germany had previously provided €167 million in 2022 and €145 million in 2021 to Afghanistan, making it among the top five donors to the World Food Programme in Afghanistan.
